News Execkutives Climate Change Forum at Stanford

Our Sept. 5 news execs climate change forum at Stanford went quite well. We had about 20 top executive editors, most of them from major metropolitan dailies. Len Downie of Washington Post, Glenn Kramon of New York Times, David Boardman of Seattle Times, David Zeeck of Tacoma News-Tribune, top editors from L.A. Times, San Francisco Chronicle, Plain-Dealer, Free Press, Courier-Journal, Bergen Country Record, Wilmington News-Journal, Des Moines Register, Milwaukee Journal-Sentinel, Salon.com, Wired, and more. Anne Thompson of NBC News attended.
Workshop created quite a positive buzz throughout the ensuing SEJ conference, and SEJ leadership appear quite pleased with the results. One disappointing presentation in the group, but not a game-breaker in the end, in part because Amory Lovins came soon afterward and re-enlivened the discussions. Lonnie Thompson, Ben Santer, Terry Root all were very good, as were Jon Krosnick, Jim Sweeney, Kan Caldeira, and Steve Schneider. A winner all around, most of us felt.
The remainder of the SEJ conference was quite outstanding too. Lots on climate change, of course. Had fun interviewing and meeting Heidi Cullen of TWC. Had fun handing out post cards re the new Yale online publication too.
Working hard now on upcoming Grantham Prize events and on launch by October 1 of the new Yale online publication.

Maine Visit August 2007

Cathie, Wally, and I drove to Natick, Mass., on Saturday, August 18, for the wedding of Adam Levin, the son of my close friend from Yeadon High School, Howard Levin. I had been the best man in Howard's and Marsha's wedding, so there was a sense of deja vu. Seeing Howard's sisters, Nancy and Freda, and in particular seeing Howard's 89-year-old and still rarin'-to-go Mom, Dorothy, was a special highlight. So too was our visit on Sunday to Newburyport, Mass., along with Mark and Bonnie Appel to visit Tom and Ann Smith. We loved Newburyport! Who wouldn't?

After a post-wedding breakfast on Monday, August 20, we picked up an anxious Wally from the animal boarding clinic and drove about three hours north to Bath, Maine. We stayed two nights with Bob and Judy Mansfield, Cathie's cousin and her husband. We enjoyed visiting the Coastal Maine Botanical Gardens, near Boothbay Harbor, and our long ride with Bob and Judy to Rangely, Maine, on the western border, near New Hampshire. What a great state this time of year!

On Wednesday, August 22, we accepted an invitation to spend the night with Nancy Pugh Morith and her guests -- including Tom and Ann -- in Union, Maine. We enjoyed a great lobster dinner before heading out the next day for Rockland, Maine, and our ferry to Vinalhaven Island, about 15 miles off the coast. We arrived on the island about noon and were met by our friend Jackleen de la Harpe, now living in Portland, Oregon, who had rented a place on the island for a week. A neat ol' fishing island with great harbor views and, again !, a great lobster dinner with Jackleen and her son Sam and friend John. who is about to start a masters program at Columbia University.

We stayed at a rooming house on Vinalhaven and left the next day, returning for one more night with Bob and Judy in Bath. On Saturday, August 25, we left their home about 2 a.m. for a 750-mile 14.5-hour drive back to White Stone.
